The Copper Scroll and its Authors

The copper scroll is one of the many scrolls found in the Qumran caves. However, unlike the other scrolls, this scroll is made from copper. It is a single roll of about 8 feet. The difference does not end there. The paleography and orthography are also different. The copper scroll is in Mishnaic Hebrew. Mishnaic Hebrew was formed primarily from the 1st to the 4th centuries CE. It corresponds to the Roman Period after the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem. The words and phrases used cannot be found in any other ancient text, making translations difficult. The scroll is a list, an itinerary of 64 places where the treasure was buried. The hidden treasure was gold and silver items used by the priests for worship in the first Jewish temple. The vast treasure is hidden in locations throughout the Judean wilderness.

The authors of the copper scroll are “five holy men.” Five years before the destruction of Solomon’s Temple, they removed the treasures to hide them. Emeq HaMelekh, an 18th-century script written by Rav Hertz. Hertz describes the mission directed by the prophet Jeremiah to hide the Ark and other sacred items. Once the temple vessels were hidden they inscribed the locations on a copper plate. The ancient writing warns that the Temple items will not be discovered until the coming of Jesus Christ.
